Alexander Dugin argues that true freedom comes within collective institutions built up by tradition and not from a path of liberal individualism. Traditionalist Alexander Dugin explains Liberalism as 'the liberation from all forms of collective identity' and argues that this is a thoroughly negative thing and that Liberal 'liberty' is not the same thing as freedom. (i.e. liberty or freedom from supposedly oppressive ties is not the same as freedom to do what you want to do which requires you to be a part of something larger than yourself.). While accepting there is a difference between modern left-liberalism (which tends towards totalitarianism) and the classical liberalism of thinkers like John Stuart Mill, he still thinks that the one is a natural progression from the other.
